Dr. Jorrit Holst

Dr. Jorrit Holst is a sustainability researcher at Institut Futur, Freie Universität Berlin. He completed his PhD as an external doctoral candidate in the Sustainability Education Research Group (SERG) in 2026.

His research, at the intersection of sustainability science, empirical social science and educational science, examines the systemic integration and practice of sustainability in education. With a methodological focus on indicator development and large-scale assessments, he has published on the policy integration of ESD in line with SDG 4.7, the measurability and effectiveness of whole-institution approaches and transformation pathways in education systems. As part of the German National Monitoring on ESD led by Prof. Dr. Gerhard de Haan, his work contributes to the scientific advisory to the UNESCO programme “ESD for 2030” in Germany.

His thesis “Sustainability in Education: An Empirical Assessment of Systemic Integration and Organisational Practice” was defended on 1 June 2026 (summa cum laude; reviewers Prof. Dr. Daniel Fischer, Prof. Dr. Kai Niebert, Prof. Dr. Matthias Barth).
