Prof. Dr. Daniel Fischer

I am Professor of Sustainability Education and Communication and head of the Sustainability Education Research Group (SERG) at Leuphana University Lüneburg. Since 2024, I also hold the UNESCO Chair "Higher Education for Sustainable Development" at the same institution.

In my research and teaching, I investigate how more sustainable lifestyles and responsible consumption can be promoted through educational and communication interventions. From a pedagogical theory perspective, my focus is on how we can enhance reflexivity and empower individuals and collectives to reconfigure their relationships with consumer societies into which they were born, grew up, and socialized in industrialized societies. In recent years, I have intensively explored how innovative teaching and learning formats such as mindfulness practices, storytelling, or citizen science approaches can contribute to this goal. My current areas of research include transformative assessment and evaluation methods, as well as participatory teaching and learning formats.

Before joining Leuphana University, I held professorships for Sustainability Education at Arizona State University (ASU) in the US and for Consumer Communication for Sustainability at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in the Netherlands for five years. I completed my doctorate in sustainability sciences with a dissertation on the role of schools in addressing global consumption challenges. Prior to that, I completed a teacher training program and a master’s degree in "Educational Management and School Development."

My full profile can be viewed on the Leuphana University website.
