Research Associate

Dr. Claire Grauer is a postdoctoral researcher and research coordinator in the group. She develops project proposals, builds networks for future collaborations and supports project staff, and she teaches in the Sachunterricht programmes.

Her research and teaching ask how transformative teaching and learning formats can promote needs-based Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE). Her doctoral thesis in sustainability science examined time use as a form of needs fulfilment in school-based ESE. She currently works on linking Global Learning and critical global citizenship education with Sachunterricht, on postcolonial perspectives in ESE and teacher training, and on cross-cultural comparisons of ESE. She works qualitatively, with action research, ethnography, autoethnography and narrative interviews.

Before coming to Leuphana, she completed a master’s degree in social anthropology, worked in German development cooperation in public health, was a freelance education consultant and trained in systemic organisational development. She is co-founder of paseo GmbH, a think-and-do tank in Hamburg for transformative learning.
